[Suggestive puns and sexual innuendos have been in the game for years; these are *not* part of my issue with the approaching champion update.]
What I find unnerving about the new Evelynn release is her excessive sexual moaning. It's beyond playful, or fun, and steps into the realm of pointless vulgarity.
We all know Evelynn's character as a seductive succubus-type a la Harley Quinn, and naturally sexual themes are brought along with that, but we must remember that League of Legends is rated PEGI 12. What does this mean? PEGI 12 defines:
'Videogames that show violence of a slightly more graphic nature towards fantasy character and/or non graphic violence towards
human-looking characters or recognisable animals, as well as videogames that show nudity of a slightly more graphic nature would
fall in this age category. Any bad language in this category must be mild and fall short of sexual expletives.'
I've seen a number of people argue that characters getting dragged into Urgot's meat grinder, or other similar depictions, is reason to counter the need to change some of Evelynn's new voice lines. However, as you can see, fantasy violence is well within the PEGI 12 rating. There are a few examples of self-censorship in the game, as with Kled's voice emote "holy s**t, where are we? I guess we'll have to kill our way out" which if left uncensored, would trespass into PEGI 15 territory. Likewise, there is no graphic nudity in the game so Battle Bunny Riven etc., while very softly provocative, is perfectly within these boundaries. The final criterion for PEGI 12 is the important part here: 'any bad language in this category must be mild and fall short of sexual expletives'. While I'm sure a certain degree of discretion is allowed for these ratings, we must agree Evelynn's sexual moaning is far from subtle, but explicit, and therefore inappropriate for this classification.
I understand that the heavy majority of our player base are teen boys, and so I have no doubts that many of us would wish for her to remain as in the current Spotlight, but we must not forget the remainder of us who aren't getting the same satisfaction from her being this way, or those of us who simply do not wish to listen to a woman orgasm while playing League of Legends, or those of us who are simply too young to be legally accessing pornographic material. Considering this, what if Evelynn was a gay male, or if she was an obvious animal character like Twitch, or Rek'Sai? Would the new voice emotes be so well-received?
People in other threads have pointed out that other characters such as Ahri on the Japanese version of the game share some of the same themes to the new Evelynn voice emotes, but the age ratings of the game in Japan, as with other parts of the world, are not the same, and in fact higher than the European PEGI rating. The terms and conditions of League of Legends state that players must be only 13 years or older.
If this is the direction League of Legends is heading, it would be a good idea to either renew the PEGI rating, or properly control the content as intended for 12/13-year-olds.
