Is Wukong versatile?

I really like champions that can adapt easy to different situations/team comps...and some people say Wukong should be played only as an assassin. But what do you do when you fall behind or the rest of your team is pretty squishy? I guess is ok to go for a bruiser build, with 3 damage items, you can still delete enemy carries...but let's say you really got crushed in lane, you're really behind... then is ok to go tank Wukong? Or tank Wukong is just a walking ult? I also want your opinion about best runes combinations for this champion on top lane. And maybe some builds examples that work very good for a bruiser/tank Wu.
