Why people with low self-esteem compensate with beeing assholes?

This is just a small phenomenon I've stumbled upon, but I found it to be maybe more common nowadays than initially thought. People are majorily discontent with themselves, maybe even to an extent of depression. I don't want to give examples to bias this discussion. But usually I thought, if someone doesn't really value himself, he'll do logically atleast one of the following: * value others more than himself * seek people who value him But none of the above will be attained when behaving like an asshole. So why does that happen? Logically speaking, what could be reasons, what could be wanted to be achieved, by behaving like that?
